2009 may have been just to late for Watchmen to make it to mainstream cinema audiences. A dark, gritty comic book adaption that is set in a world not so different from our own. To bad The Dark Knight beat it to the punch a year earlier. Fresh off the success of 300, Zack Snyder was the man for the job, and I still believe he did the best he could with a source material that was tough to adapt.
The film is visually stunning, containing some of the best montages in cinema. The period driven soundtrack is also outstanding, in particular the opening scene set to Bob Dylan’s the times they are a changing sets up the world perfectly. Despite what has happened to Snyders career, this stands as his crowning achievement.
