I’m completely at odds with myself about this one. Yes it’s Stanley Kubrick. Yes it’s visually stunning and goes at its own pace sometimes as a strength and other times to its detriment. But after watching this lately and sitting there for three long hours, I honestly couldn’t whole heartedly recommend Barry Lyndon to most people.
If your a lover of film and all the qualities that go into making one, then by all means you really should watch just about anything Kubrick makes. But that doesn’t mean I have to enjoy it. Even the most tense and heightened of moments are strung out to a glacial pace. I don’t need explosions every five minutes, I enjoy the slow burn, but this isn’t a film I’ll be rewatching any time soon.
