January 28th 2019: A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange came around at the most influential time of my life. Still in my youth and starting to try out all the new things teenager begin to try out. Here was this film that had become infamous for its depiction of sex and violence. When I finally watched it, it seemed tame by today’s standards but it was fascinating and totally captured my young mind. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve dressed up as the droogs for various Halloween fancy dress parties.

This may be my favourite Stanley Kubrick film, never has he felt so mischievous and wild. Malcolm McDowells now iconic turn as Alex is a pleasure to watch. His love for Beethoven, murder and rape is equal parts revolting and engrossing. The soundtrack and often uncomfortable cinematography along with the top class directing and over the top acting make this a classic for a reason.
