Reading The Great Gatsby as a 17 yer old at school was a mixed bag. The bitter sadness that surrounds all of its characters and soulless parties that form the centre piece of the book create a story that is as far from glamorous as you can get. Yet Baz Luhrmans film Is drenched in colour and excess. All with a modern pop song soundtrack that seems to leave the themes of the book behind.
I did enjoy this film however. The direction is vibrant and the actors give it their all. A particular stand out is Joel Edgerton as Tom. It has all the usual style over substance trappings of a Luhrman movie, but not every film needs to be an in depth, realistic character study. I just feel that perhaps this particular story merited one.
